The Forgotten Warrior
Repeatedly he fought, and won,
With each victory he gained a life, Though he never chose his own, Every time he fought he saved one of us; And every time he fought he weakened, It has been said 'A hero's story is told, Atop the corpses of far better men.' In my case it is most certainly true, For with his last strength he saved me, And doomed himself to certain death. They named me a hero because I survived, But I have measured the cost of my life; I survived at the expense of a better man than I. So here's to the forgotten dead, Whose glorious ranks I hope to one day join. |
